Flight and Safe Haven My family fled Castro's dictatorship in Cuba in 1962 after everything had been taken from us, arriving in the United States with what we could carry in our hands. We were very fortunate in that we were taken under the wings of some wonderful people, and after periods in Miami, Florida and Charlotte, North Carolina we wound up in Indianapolis, Indiana. Now when people who've never been there think "Indiana", they think corn. And if they combine that state's name with music, they think country. If they know a little more then they might think Bill Monroe (and his renowned Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival). Digging even deeper they'll find Hoagy Carmichael, Cole Porter, Wes Montgomery, Gary Burton, Michael Jackson, and Babyface. This isn't "The Crossroads of America" for nothing! Indianapolis is a big city, and when you get inside it there's a lot of urban edge. That's where my place was, and when I was old enough I spent most of my nights playing the clubs that featured rhythmic and hard-hitting dance music. This was my early education. New Horizons But I wanted to expand the limits of my playing and in 1974 I found myself at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. I dedicated myself to the teachings of the masters (Miles Davis, et al) and learned the intricacies of composition and theory. I took my certificate three years later, in 1977. Recursive Iterations After graduation I went back to playing and teaching. And years of seeing the sun rise before I saw my own bed engendered in me a longing for a change in biorhythms that led me into a completely different field: I moved out to the West Coast in order to study computer programming. But my roots are in music. I love playing it, I love talking about it, and I really love teaching it.
